“The dramatic Cantata “Trial by Jury” was the first work in which Mr Richard D’Oyly Carte invited Gilbert and Sullivan to collaborate and was produced at the Royalty Theatre, on 25th March, 1875. To write a synopsis of this delightful little opera would be nearly sacrilege; suffice it to say it is packed with grand humour and excellent music and fills approximately thirty-five minutes. In a few words, it is a typical Gilbert and Sullivan caricature of justice in a breach of promise case, during which the defendant is scarcely given a hearing, but Judge, Jury, Counsel and Usher all fall in love with the charming plaintiff, and in the end the Judge settles the case by marrying the plaintiff himself.”
