Guys and DollsOn Broadway, the Guys and Dolls eke out a meagre existence, ministered unto by Sarah Brown and her Save a Soul Mission on the one hand, and by Nathan Detroit and his Floating Crap Game on the other. However, neither God nor Mammon is doing well. No one comes to Sarah’s prayer meetings and Officer Brannigan of the New York Police Department is closing more and more doors to Nathan’s illicit gambling activities. For a thousand dollars Nathan can secure the Biltmore Garage for the next game, a very large sum to raise, giving Nathan much pressure, added to by his fiancée of fourteen years, Miss Adelaide, the singer at the Hot Box night club. She very much wishes he would do something ‘less illegal’. Sky Masterson, the highest player of them all, arrives on Broadway en route for Havana, and boasts that if he chose to he could take any Doll there with him. Nathan bets Sky a thousand that he can’t take Sarah Brown. On the face of it, Nathans bet is as good as won, but Sky promises Sarah he will bring 12 lost souls to a make-or-break meeting at the Mission, now threatened with closure, if she will have dinner with him at El Café Cubano, Havana. Sky and Sarah fly to Cuba, and find that they mean more to each other than a thousand bucks or a dozen sinners. Nathan takes advantage of Sarah’s absence to hold a crap game in the Mission. Sarah returns that evening to find the police raiding the place. She reproaches herself for going off with Sky, and shows him the door. Sky however, being a gambler, cannot welsh on his side of the bargain with Sarah, 12 sinners at least must be provided for the crucial midnight prayer meeting. Scraping the very bottom of the barrel, and ignoring an appointment to elope with Adelaide, Nathan has transferred the game to a convenient New York sewer. Here, Sky rolls the dice for the highest stakes ever, the Guys eternal souls, or at least their bodies for the next hour or so. Adelaide feels that the prayer meeting is merely Nathan’s latest, and most spectacular, excuse for non-elopement, but Sky delivers his sinners and disappears having saved the mission. Sarah learns from Nathan that Sky has conceded the Havana bet, despite having really won it, and Adelaide learns from Sarah that Nathan really has been at a prayer meeting. The Dolls decide they should marry the guys after all…so they do!  |
