OklahomaThis musical is set in the early 1990s, a time of much tension in the developing territory of Oklahoma. The cowboys are finding it difficult to come to terms with their new neighbours the farmers, ‘earthwatchers’ as they call them. The tensions are never far from the surface. However, Curly a young cowboy, in common with many others, is considering crossing the barrier as he finds himself increasingly attracted to Laurey. Although not very sure of his ground, the coming Box Social seems to offer the ideal opportunity for moving things forward, but in the opening scene we see how difficult it is for the young couple to be honest with each other, even with the gentle joshing of Eller, Laurey’s aunt. When Laurey flounces out, the invitation to the Box Social still hanging in the air, Aunt Eller assures Curly that Laurey obviously likes him a lot. At this point Will Parker returns from Kansas City eager to tell of his exploits. He certainly has stories to tell, and purchases to show, fresh from the big city and with great exuberance exhibits his new found dancing skills. As they all leave Curly returns and hears Jud Fry, a very unsavoury character who is Eller’s hired hand, announcing that he is taking Laurey to the Box Social. She does not deny it. Ado Annie, a young lady who finds it very hard to resist the opposite sex, arrives with her latest beau, Ali Hakim, a Persian peddler, and it is immediately apparent that he is not as keen as she is on the idea of any permanent relationship. He finds his troubles have only just started, as Eller has a great deal to say about the shoddy goods he sold last time he was there, and then looking down the barrel of Ado Annie’s father’s shotgun, he finds himself betrothed! Meanwhile, after a fortune-telling session with the girls, Laurey falls asleep on her swing, and has a vivid dream involving Jud Fry and Curly, who by then we have seen in conversation showing how deep their dislike is for each other. The ongoing tension between the farmers and the cowmen finally erupts into a fight, but some very straight talking from Aunt Eller quickly stops this and the Box Social Auction is announced with Eller the unanimous choice for auctioneer. Will raises the cash to secure Ado Annie’s basket, and hopefully her heart, by selling all the presents he has bought for her in Kansas City to a very willing buyer, Ali Hakim, who can see a way out of his predicament. Then with the auction almost over, a bidding duel develops between Curly and Jud for Laurey’s lunchbox. Curly wins by selling his saddle, his horse and his gun. Heartened by Curly’s obvious feelings for her, in a confrontation with Jud, Laurey finds courage to dismiss him. |
