Kiss Me KateKiss Me Kate opens on Stage at the Ford Theatre, Baltimore where an American touring company is rehearsing a musical version of Shakespeare’s Taming Of The Shrew. Fred Graham, the leading actor and Manager of the company is playing the part of Petruchio in the musical and his leading lady, Kate, is played by Lilli Vanessi who happens to be Fred’s ex wife. The show centres around their love/hate relationship both on and off stage. Helping to fuel the fires of passion is Lois Lane, the soubrette of the company. Lois is really in love with actor Bill Calhoun but realises that if she wants to make a name in show business she must be ‘friendly’ to the Manager. Lilli gets very jealous and during the first performance of the show Fred and Lilli have a blazing row which ends in Fred spanking her on stage. As a result of her public humiliation Lilli decides to leave the show. Meanwhile...Bill Calhoun who is a heavy gambler loses a lot of money and writes an IOU in Fred Graham’s name. When two gunmen arrive at the theatre to collect the debt they naturally ask for Fred. Fred manages to persuade the gunmen that the only way he can repay the supposed debt is for Lilli to finish the week in the theatre. The gunmen use their own style of persuasion to make Lilli stay in the show so she pleads for help to her fiancée, a high ranking general. Does Lilli leave the show? Do the gunmen get their money? Is Fred Graham ruined?  |
